What Is the Can-Am Commander?

The two-seat Commander is Can-Am’s recreational-utility crossover. The Commander 700 uses a 650cc liquid-cooled Rotax ACE single-cylinder engine rated at 52 horsepower and 42 lb-ft of torque. The 700 is a sensible choice for moderate trail riding, property travel, hunting access and owners who value purchase price and controlled power over maximum acceleration.

The Commander 1000R uses a 976cc liquid-cooled Rotax V-twin rated at 100 horsepower. Its Quick Response System CVT includes high-airflow ventilation, Electronic Drive Belt Protection and an Extra-Low range. The additional output is immediately useful at Colorado elevation, on steep grades, with heavy cargo, or when larger tires and demanding terrain add load.

Neither engine is automatically the right answer for every buyer. The 700 delivers the core Commander experience at a lower entry point and is easier to use gently around property. The 1000R provides much stronger reserve and is the better fit for aggressive recreation, higher elevations and specialized XT-P or X mr use. Buyers should compare the entire package rather than judging the decision only by horsepower.

Colorado Elevation, Trails and Seasonal Conditions

Electronic fuel injection adjusts fueling as elevation changes, but naturally aspirated engines still lose some output in thinner air. The 700 remains useful for moderate workloads and relaxed trail travel around Colorado Springs, while the 1000R leaves more reserve for mountain grades, passengers, cargo and larger tires. For winter riding, coordinate visibility, clothing, tire choice, recovery equipment and electrical accessories rather than assuming four-wheel drive alone will solve every condition.

Suspension, Steering and Drivetrain

Commander DPS models use Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering to reduce steering effort and let the driver choose the assistance level. The standard trail platform uses double A-arm front suspension and Can-Am’s TTA rear suspension, with substantial travel for a vehicle that also carries a working cargo box. Exact travel, shock type, tire size and ground clearance depend on package.

DPS and XT models use an automatic-locking Visco-Lok QE front differential. XT-P upgrades to Smart-Lok, which gives the driver more control over how the front differential responds in changing terrain. X mr also uses terrain-specific drivetrain equipment to support deep mud and low-traction conditions. Select the least aggressive drive setting that maintains control; locked traction can help in difficult terrain but also changes steering behavior.

The Commander is not simply a Defender with sport seats. Its chassis, seating position, suspension tuning and power delivery favor a more energetic trail experience. At the same time, it is not intended to match the long-travel speed of a Maverick X3 or Maverick R. Its advantage is balance.

Cargo, Towing and Everyday Utility

The tilting cargo box is the feature that makes the Commander genuinely useful between trail rides. It can carry tools, fencing supplies, firewood, recovery gear, camping equipment or a hunting load without filling the passenger area. Built-in LinQ mounting points make it easier to secure compatible storage without starting every trip with a web of straps.

The Commander can also support towing and receiver-mounted accessories, but buyers should confirm the current towing, payload, bed and tongue-weight ratings for the exact configuration. Accessories, cargo and occupants all contribute to the operating load. On steep Colorado grades, a rated maximum should not be treated as the ideal load for every surface or weather condition.

Use low range for slow towing, technical climbing and other high-load operation. Commander XT

XT is the all-around trail and utility package. It typically adds the high-value equipment many owners install immediately, including a full hard roof, front bumper, 4,500-pound winch, cast-aluminum wheels and more capable trail tires. The 1000R version also brings the stronger engine and package-specific high-clearance suspension hardware. Commander XT-P

XT-P is the aggressive trail package. It combines the 1000R engine with Smart-Lok, FOX 2.5 PODIUM piggyback shocks with QS3 compression adjustment, 30-inch trail tires and beadlock wheels. The upgrade is most valuable for drivers who carry speed through rough terrain, want more suspension control, or regularly encounter rock and ruts. An XT may be the more economical choice when the machine spends most of its time on maintained roads and moderate trails.

Commander X mr

X mr is the purpose-built mud and extreme-terrain package. It uses the 1000R engine with mud-focused intake and drivetrain preparation, aggressive 30-inch tires, high-clearance suspension hardware and approximately 15 inches of ground clearance. It is the right tool for deep mud, wet lowlands, snow and heavily rutted access routes. Its specialized tires and setup are less refined on hardpack, so buyers should choose X mr because their terrain demands it rather than for appearance alone.

LinQ Accessories and Building the Right Commander

Can-Am’s LinQ system uses dedicated mounting points to secure compatible boxes, coolers, racks, bags and holders quickly. On a crossover side-by-side, that flexibility is especially useful: the bed can carry tools during the week, hunting equipment in season and camping supplies on the weekend without permanent cargo hardware occupying the entire box.

Choose a Defender when work comes first.
