What Is the Can-Am Defender HD10?

HD10 identifies Can-Am’s 976cc naturally aspirated Rotax V-twin rated at 82 horsepower and 69 lb-ft of torque. It is more powerful than the HD7 and HD9 while remaining on the proven Defender platform that supports standard, MAX, PRO, 6x6, X mr and enclosed-cab configurations. The newer HD11 sits above it as Can-Am’s redesigned premium powertrain, but the HD10 continues to offer an unusually wide choice of specialized packages.

This variety matters because the engine is only part of the decision. Passenger capacity, weather protection, steering assistance, factory protection and recovery equipment can change how useful a Defender is every day. The strongest purchase is the package that matches the work rather than simply the trim with the longest equipment list.

976cc Rotax V-Twin: Power Made for Work

The current Defender HD10 uses a liquid-cooled 976cc Rotax V-twin rated at 82 horsepower and 69 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with Can-Am’s PRO-TORQ CVT, which includes Quick Response System engagement, high airflow ventilation and Electronic Drive Belt Protection. The transmission provides Park, Reverse, Neutral, High, Low and an Extra-Low range for demanding low-speed jobs.

That Extra-Low range is one of the HD10’s most valuable work features. It lets the driveline operate at a more appropriate ratio while pulling, climbing, plowing or moving slowly with a load.
